The most impressive thing about Itachi Uchiha’s character is that he is not over-explained like most other characters in Naruto.

Itachi is arguably the best written character in the entire series, with the only rival of him being Pain. Kishimoto did a brilliant and masterful job with his character, and he sits at the highest echelon of Naruto characters.

Itachi, lived a life on regrets. This sentiment is particularly clear and heavily implied during his fight against Kabuto. He lied to himself. He endured the way Shinobi live, and remained a true Shinobi only to suffer his whole life. A Shinobi is someone who endures… they say. And if we go by this definiton, Itachi was definitely the best Shinobi that there was.

Itachi’s actions were decided because he was introduced to the horros of war when he was young. Fugaku showing him them lead to the Uchiha Clan’s downfall, as Itachi developed a pacifist who would avoid war at all costs. Even if it meant him killing people, his own kind.

Itachi suffered all of his life. Regretted his decisions. Manipulated and threatened by Danzo, also to save his little brother, he chose to suffer all of his life. He chose to side with Konoha, making himself an international terrorist for his whole life, and making his brother suffer too.

But in the end, it was obvious that he regretted it. By his own words, he was delusional. He thought he could carry it all by himself, he could accomplish everything. He stopped listening to anyone, and stopped trusting anyone. Itachi, when he fully matured as a person, realized that what he had done was wrong. He didn’t see who he truly was and couldn’t forgive himself.

But when he realized that he was wrong, the time was over for him. He already was known as an international criminal and a merciless mass murderer. He already, had killed his clan. It was late. Itachi, however chose to give Kabuto a chance. To repent for his mistakes, he chose to teach Sasuke what he had done wrong, and find in himself what he was unable to find within him. What was that thing?

Forgiveness. The ability to look behind his past self and move forward. Learning to forgive himself and finding his true self. That is what Sasuke does in the blank period. Looking for redemption and finding out what he truly was. How Itachi affected Sasuke and their dynamic was truly brilliant.
